KARMETRA SHY

Biography

Karmetra Shy is a professional dancer, educator, and choreographer with a B.S. from Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance, specializing in Secondary Education. Over the past ten years, Karmetra has worked as both a performer and a certified teacher, developing and implementing arts-based curricula that incorporate dance, drama, and social-emotional learning. She has taught in the Houston Independent School District, Alief Independent School District, KIPP Public Schools, United Way, and internationally. Her teaching approach integrates movement and dance to foster creativity and skill development. Karmetra taught at the International School of Kuwait, where she developed a comprehensive dance and drama curriculum and created performances. She has performed on major stages in the Middle East, including with Sense Company for Artistic Production Theatre and Broadway Theatre Joy Productions in Kuwait. Locally, she has shared the stage with Dance Houston, Houston City Dance Professional Company, Black Angels Collective, Unleashed Dance Company, and NewEra Theatre Troupe, showcasing her diverse artistry. As a Teaching Artist with Performing Arts Houston, Karmetra leads workshops combining creative writing and dance to inspire collaboration and self-expression. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of The Shyne Project, a Houston based nonprofit organization that integrates dance, drama, and mental health awareness to empower youth through creative expression, personal growth, and community engagement.
